January Newsletter 2023

Happy New Year!!
My main goal for our tennis club in 2023 is getting us moved back to the Monterey Bay League.
This would allow Morgan Hill and Gilroy to get more tennis playing time by having teams that
can play out of two areas. I spoke with Norcal this morning and was told they will be looking at
boundaries this coming summer. I will be sending them a letter stating our request which if
granted would not start until 2024.
We have drop-in tennis at Las Animas Park:
Monday and Thursday evening starting at 6:30. Call Tanmaya 408-838-8740 for more details
Monday AM 9:00-11:00 just show up

If anyone would like to join the morning tennis groups, please call:
Wednesday 9:00-11:00 Carol 408-966-5174
Friday 9:00-11:00 Carla 408-843-8374

2022 Fall Chili Cook-off

"

Hello All:

Thank you to all that came out Saturday night to our annual Chili Cook-off fundraiser.  It was a smashing success due to all that helped make it possible.  Per Tim, we had about 80 people there. :-)

A special thank you to all our 8 chefs, without them, there would be no cookoff.  We had 4 random judges and they were all impressed with the quality and how tasty all the chili were.  It was a very close contest.  Here are the results.

- People's Choice award went to Theresse Tan, who was gracious enough to spend her actual birthday with us

Judges awards:
- 1st place went to Abbie Serrano (People's choice last year)
- 2nd place went to Nick Gamino
- 3rd place went to Erik Styblo
- 4th place went to Leigh Payne
Congrats to all the winners!!!

I would like to especially acknowledge the following people:
- Denise Ramos for the delicious home-made desserts and for donating it to the event
- Bonnie Chamchawee for providing yummy chicken and beef satay skewers.  Thank you to Abbie, Sunny-Side-Up aka Josh and Tomomi for coming out Friday night to help prep the skewers.
- Mona and Sukanya Stephani for bringing more tasty appetizer dishes
- Paul Nguyen for being our official photographer of the evening.  Love all the pictures
- Ruth Irving, Sally Wrye, Nick Cabassa and Mitch Priest for being our judges
- Kathy Cabassa for helping out Saturday night
- Tim Wrye for being the money man

The band, Sound Decision, was awesome and interacted with the people.  A great time was had by all!  Hope you'll join in the fun next year!

I appreciate all the help and support!

Thank you!!!
Rachel

Wine Tasting/Dinner Fundraiser: A huge thank you to Rich and Cathy Gamboa for hosting this fundraiser at their beautiful home in Morgan Hill. A big thank you to Paul Nguyen who took pictures all throughout capturing the flavor of the event. Many of the attendees enjoyed “hamming it up” in front of the photo screen. Pictures are posted here.

We sold 72 tickets (over the amount we were actually aiming for). It was a relaxing afternoon sipping wine, eating appetizers and visiting with friends while those who entered the wine tasting contest were enjoying a wide variety of wine. A delicious dinner was served afterwards while listening to live music put on by Rich and Al Cabassa with Lisa Cabassa lending her lovely voice to some of the songs. After dinner, the raffle winners were announced ending the evening on a high note. It was a profitable event for the club.

Tempo/Usual Suspects: Yes!! The Usual Suspects are back at Tempo in Gilroy on Saturday, July 2nd at 8:00 PM. What a way to ring in the “Fourth of July” with dancing the night away to your favorite music. Let’s have a tennis club get together at Tempo. Make reservations early if you want a place to sit.

Locking Tennis Courts: Due to the recent continual vandalism of nets, the courts at Las Animas are going to be locked nightly for the next few months. They will be unlocked at 7:30 AM and locked by 11:00 PM. If the vandalism continues, the courts will have to be locked earlier. Please report any problems you witness out there by calling the non-emergency number 408-846-0350 and then please notify me. (I also understand that Las Animas and San Ysidro Parks are slated for brand new “state of the art” restrooms probably coming in 2023.)
Bathrooms for right now should be up and running in a few weeks to get us by in the meantime. Public works is just waiting for parts.

Board Members: We would like to start having more social tournaments and events while still promoting USTA teams but we need help. If anyone is in helping plan these events, please contact me. We need everyone’s help if we are going to make these changes so no one gets
burnt out. Please send me your name and contact information if you would like to be involved.

That is it for now. Happy hitting and I hope to see you at Tempo on July 2nd.

Sept '21 Newsletter

"Congratulations to Judy McBrearty’s 40+ 3.5 women’s team. They are going to Sectionals in two weeks. Gilroy Tennis Club wishes you good luck and we know you will represent us well. Go get ‘em, gals. Upcoming Events: Chili Cook-off: Mark your calendar for our annual chili cook-off on October 16th, Sarah’s Vineyard from 6:00-9:00. We need chefs so if you have a special chili, please let us know that you would like to cook. It is all of our great chefs that makes this event so special. Please seriously consider being one. Cost will be $30.00 per person with our chefs getting in for free. The price includes 2 glasses of wine, corn bread, salad, appetizers, dessert, chili samples and music by Rich Gamboa. This event will be open to the public 21+ years of age. Please invite your friends and family to join us for an evening of fun. A flier will be coming out in the near future with all of the details. October Halloween Tournament: A Spooktacular mixed doubles tennis tournament on October 29th from 6:00-8:00. Mark your calendar. More details to follow as we get closer. Costumes encouraged. Pickleball issue: The City Administrator stated the pickleball players have until their court reservation runs out which is September 30th. The deal between the city and the pickleballers was they had to return to Wheeler Auditorium once it opened up after Covid. If people question why we will not share courts 5 and 6 with pickle ball, here are some facts:

  1. The tennis club has put in over $200,000 into all six courts for community tennis.
  2. We are a USTA facility and we need five courts for our five line teams. Court 6 was paid for by the Tennis Club and one of the members.
  3. The Tennis Club pays for all upkeep and improvements for these six tennis courts. This includes: re-surfacing, windscreens, nets, net straps, posts. The Tennis Club has purchased bleachers, (one that Little League uses), installed cement benches alongside the courts, and our granite table. We were instrumental in providing electricity to the courts. If I have forgotten something, someone can chime in.
The City of Gilroy does not contribute any money which saves money for them to be spent elsewhere. We maintain these courts for all the citizens of Gilroy who want to play tennis whether they are tennis club members or not. We support Parks and Recreation’s junior and adult tennis classes and their summer tennis camps. Courts 5 and 6 as of today, have $10,000 worth of damage done to them when the pickle ballers gray taped their lines. The tape pulled up the surface and sand is coming through. If anyone has played on those courts with the pickle ball lines, one will see how confusing it is to play tennis with all of the lines on the courts. While we recognize the need for pickle ball courts, Las Animas courts are not the answer. With all of the new people moving south, there are a lot more people playing tennis in the mornings and evenings plus weekends. We need to service that community. We have stated we will help the pickle ballers find funding for pickle ball courts and we look forward to having pickle ball courts hopefully at Las Animas Park right alongside the tennis courts. That is it for now. Please consider attending our two club events that were mentioned above. It is your support that helps us fund the needed improvements at Las Animas.
